A Brooder for birds is either gas or electric. With sharp rises in energy prices, the capital cost of an efficient brooder can quickly be recouped. It is very important that a game or chicken brooder puts infra-red heat down to chick level as it is vital that poultry and game birds get off to a good start.
We recommend that a gas brooder is not only linked with the correct regulators but also that it has a thermostatic controller to keep an even brooding temperature above the chick.
Infra-red electric brooder lamps are often used for smaller numbers of chicks but again it cannot be stressed too much that the shape of the cowling around the bulb reflects the heat onto the brooding chicks. Infra-red bulbs come in different strengths and are coloured red or white. It is possible to link several together to create a larger brooding area.
The size of the brooder will also be determined by the level of insulation and the type of bedding inside the shed.
